What is and is Not Truth

Tuesday, we had an event here at WKU called the Veritas Forum. The speaker at the forum challenged us to think about and seek answers to the "big questions" in life. What is the meaning of life? Why are we here? Why is there evil/suffering? and so on... As I was processing these things in my own mind, I felt the urge to write a song about it. The result is sort of a summary of/response to the ideas presented at the forum. It is called "What is and is Not Truth."
______________

What is and is not truth?
The struggle of both old and youth
To find what won’t break down
When discord in our life abounds

Why do good and evil appear
In a world full of both smiles and of tears?
Give me an answer that will not fade
Under the contrast of our days

Because I don’t want to live a lie
There must be a purpose that we live and die
Give me a reason for hope in the sadness
And a beauty prevailing despite evil

For we are wicked men deep down
Yet we cry out at injustice found
Give me an answer for this state of man
That won’t collapse under shifting sands

Because I don’t want to live a lie
There must be a purpose that we live and die
Give me a reason for hope in the sadness
And a beauty prevailing despite evil

And as the evidence falls
The truth may not be what we thought
But will we swallow our pride
And follow where truth guides?

Are we an accident? Are we just apes?
Or are we more valuable than they say?
As we seek to pick our side
Remember truth is not ours to decide
the truth is not ours to decide

Because I don’t want to live a lie
There must be a purpose that we live and die
And we must all seek both nail and tooth
To find what is and is not truth

Here is a rough demo of what the song will sound like:
