The past two weeks I have been buried in school work; if fact, as I write this I’m still pretty well buried in it. It has been a miserable experience to say the least. I really enjoy what I’m learning in school, but this being my 8th year of college/graduate studies I’m pretty much sick of school. I am really tired of having school work hanging over my head when it feels like there are better ways I could be spending my time. However, the performance monster always seems to keep me on task. Combine that with all that is due this week it was looking like another weekend of churning out pages on my computer screen…
There was just one problem. Many months ago I convinced a friend of mine from St. Louis that he needed to come see Thunder Over Louisville. I knew if he came down nothing would get done, but we had planned on this for so long I felt like if I backed out now I would be going back on my word (which I take very seriously). Opting to keep my word, we made plans for him to spend the weekend here.
Initially, I was apprehensive about the weekend. I wondered if I would even be able to enjoy it with paperwork looming on the not so distant horizon. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The entire weekend was spent amongst friends, and the time could not have been spent any better. Friday we all prayed together. Saturday we spent the day outside watching planes, people, and fireworks. Sunday we worshiped together, a few of them even came to watch my Ultimate games. What a blessing!
Normally, I wouldn’t have chosen my weekend to be spent this way having so much left to be done, but God knew my needs. He knew what I needed to restore my sanity and my patience. He knew what I needed to get me out of the funk I’ve been in. The friendships God has given me have been such a blessing to my life. Just when I start to get off track, they point me back to Him.
After my Ultimate game today, I was overwhelmed by the simple kindness of having even a few people come and watch me play. I felt unworthy of such great relationships. I still feel unworthy…but that simple kindness and many others throughout the weekend reminded me of how good our God is and depth of His love. I needed that reminder more than any amount of pages I could have written this weekend.
I needed this weekend badly. My practical side wouldn’t have told me so, but God knew what I needed most.
