Morality ,TV, & Santa Claus

I don't even know what made me think of this...

I fear for my children. That is, if God so blesses me with children. Of course, that would require him blessing me with a wife first, and even a girlfriend before that... Nevertheless, I see things all the time that makes me fearful to someday be a parent. It seems like you can't even watch a college basketball game without there being an ad selling sex, or a commercial for this week's TV drama which flashes a gory image of a dead body on the screen. Sitcoms and radio shows use language now that during my childhood would have been considered vulgar, yet for my children it seems like this course talk will be commonplace. How do you even go about protecting your children from all (or even most of) the filth out there?

Oddly enough, one of the things that worries me most is Santa Claus. I fear I might have a bit of a moral dilemma with jolly old St. Nick. Is it not a lie to teach your children about Santa? Am I the only one who has a problem with this? I know it's not a "big" lie, but my experience with lying has not been a pleasant one. I have seen even what I have thought was the smallest of lies cause a great deal of hurt. Plus, whenever I lie, no matter how small, I just get this dirty feeling inside. I don't want to be that guy whose kids ruin Santa for all the other kids, but I don't want to be that guy who spends all December feeling like dishonest scum either.

I'm guessing I will eventually cave to Santa. Fortunately, with the direction (or lack of) my life is heading right now, I won't have to deal with that for a long while. It's never too early to prepare for battle though, right?

Your not alone in that Jon, its something I've thought about too. And the Santa thing, I had a co-worker whose eight year old son got very hurt and angry when he found out his parents had been lying. It is something to wonder about.

Jon, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who worries about telling their children about Santa! I began thinking about it this winter actually, when my preacher talked about how the idea of "Santa bringing gifts to the good children" went against the core of what we believe as Christians. We get what we recieve from Him because of His love!..not works. I don't want my children to believe that they have to act a certain way in order to recieve blessings, but instead because of love. The idea of Santa kind of reiterates that actions=gifts. Kind of deep, but it's something I've thought about. :)
